Valentines Day Celebration
We will be having a Valentine’s Day celebration in class on Friday February 13th. Students are welcome to bring in valentines / treats to pass out to their classmates. We have 18 students in our class.
Trent, Erin, Cohen, Aloysius, Jayla, Emery, Brielle, Thomas, Aubrey, Cade, Aayansh, Ariannah, Gabrielle, Benson, Grace, Grayson, Easton and Kent.
Literacy:
We are looking at open and closed syllables. Open syllables end in a vowel that says its long name (e.g., go, me), while closed syllables end in a consonant that forces the vowel to make its short sound (e.g., got, met).
Think of it as a “closed door” (consonant) trapping the vowel to make it short, or an “open door” letting it sound long.
Word Work
Open syllables
we – hi – go – me – re
Closed syllables
wet – him – got -met – red
Heart Words
friend –been – into – because
Math:
We are still exploring numbers larger than 100. Last week, we looked at slip counting by 2’s and 5’s (up to 200) and placing numbers on a number line. This week, we will continue with this and move on to using referents.
Place value example:
132
100 + 30 + 2
165
The value of the bold digit is 60 (6 tens)
Base Ten

= 140
Comparing Numbers: 197 > 123
Number line examples:

Looking for extra practice in math?
Students can always use extra practice with adding and subtracting numbers within 20.
Addition:
8 + 2 = 10
6 + 3 = 9
10 + 5 = 15
9 + 8 = 17
1 + 18 = 19
1 1 + 5 = 16
4 + 3 = 7
9 + 5 = 14
Subtraction:
19 – 6 = 13
12 – 8 = 4
17 – 9 = 8
9 – 5 = 4
13 – 8 = 5
16 – 6 = 10
20 – 7 = 13
18 – 9 = 9
